While sports cards remain hot, trading card expansions are shaking up the market. Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, and even luxury brand trading cards are gaining traction. With record-breaking auctions (like the $6 million sale of a Pokémon Illustrator card in 2023), investors are taking trading cards seriously.

Even though the industry constantly adopts new design trends, the significance of retro design is increasing. Things that were once obsolete are now new again; old trends and designs are now brought out, dusted, and put into use, thus proving their point.

The popular retro pop art style was developed within the period from the 1940s to the 1960s. The style uses bold and eye-catching graphics that were easy to reproduce on a simple press. After a while the art style was forgotten about, however lately it experienced a resurgence. Nowadays most artists use computers to create designs inspired by this style. Some dedicated retro designers prefer to make the designs old-school style for a more authentic look.

Another master of the genre was German-born Johann Zoffany, who captured the details of a performance with photographic accuracy. Among his finest pictures is that of Macklin as Shylock in Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. Painted in 1768, it depicts a distraught Shylock, reeling from the news that his daughter Jessica has eloped — and taken his money and jewels with her.

Artists, meanwhile, were pretty much guaranteed a success, given their subject’s fame. Hogarth sold his painting of Garrick as Richard III for £200 — a sum that he himself noted, with pride if also exaggeration, ‘was more than any painter was known to receive for a portrait’.

Students interested in studying theatre arts can pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in performance, directing, playwriting, and design. Institutions like Kalamazoo College and Marymount Manhattan College provide dedicated programs focused on both the theoretical and practical aspects of theatre.

Jonson’s masterpiece The Alchemist would provide Garrick with one of his most enduring roles — that of the greedy, gullible tobacconist, Abel Drugger. Zoffany produced a superb painting of one performance (above), capturing the glint in Drugger’s eye as he imagines the boost to his business promised by the other two men on stage.
